The Golden Scarab · Realistic Watercolour Beetle Workshop

Realistic watercolour · step by step

Paint this golden scarab so real it looks like it could crawl off the paper

...even if you're a complete beginner who's never painted before.

The finished golden scarab watercolour painting on the desk, a hand adding the last highlight with a fine brush

Imagine...

  • Imagine laying down the last dark reflection on the shell, leaning back, and watching the whole beetle suddenly turn to metal. That quiet little thought: I actually made this.
  • Imagine it framed in the hallway, and a guest leaning in close to check whether it's a print, a photo, or a real pinned specimen. Then the look on their face when you say you painted it yourself.
  • Imagine a slow afternoon with your brushes, the room quiet, an hour disappearing while you work on one small shining thing. The kind of calm you've been missing.

But isn't something this realistic far too advanced for a beginner?

It looks like it should be. And here's what usually happens when someone tries: the shine comes out flat and chalky, like a yellow bug instead of a gold one. So you add more paint to fix it. Then the colours turn to mud. One side of the body ends up bigger than the other, the legs look like stiff wire, and the whole thing starts to look like a cartoon instead of a specimen.

The real problem isn't talent. Nobody shows you the one rule that makes a beetle shine: the shine is the paper. You never paint it. You paint around it, in a fixed order, from the palest glow to the darkest reflection, and you stop the moment the shell turns to metal.

That's really all it comes down to: order, and leaving the white alone. Trace the outline so both sides match. Mark the highlights before you touch a brush. Build the gold in three thin layers. Put the darks in last. Every step has a clear finish, so you always know when you're done.

So your colours stay clean. The shine stays exactly where you left it. Plain paint and paper turn into a beetle that looks far harder to make than it was. No guesswork. No mud.

Here's the best part

One map, every beetle

Every beetle is built the same way: a shell, a shine, and six legs. You learn the map once on the golden scarab, and it never stops paying off.

Inside the course you'll use the exact same steps to paint these two stag beetles as well, with a traceable outline and a colour recipe for each.

Finished realistic watercolour stag beetle in bronze and olive with large antler mandibles
The Bronze Stag BeetleLucanus cervus
Finished realistic watercolour stag beetle with black armour and saffron-orange wing cases
The Saffron Stag BeetleOdontolabis

And once you've got the map, you can paint almost any beetle from any photo, from a ladybird to a rhinoceros beetle. Module 6 shows you exactly how.

Meet Your Instructor

Helena, the instructor, at her desk with brushes and a painting in progress

Hi, I'm Helena.

I've been painting with watercolours for over 15 years, and painting realistic beetles is one of my favourite ways to spend a quiet afternoon. I fell in love with them because they look far more impressive than they are to make. The polished shell, the light catching the shine, people assume it took years, when really it's all about the right order and leaving the white paper alone.

What I love most is helping complete beginners realise, "Wait... I actually made this." You don't need talent or years of practice. Just a simple project, a little patience, and someone to walk you through it.

I can't wait to see your beetles.

Helena

Introducing...

The Golden Scarab

The Golden Scarab realistic watercolour workshop, the finished painting

The simple, step-by-step path to a realistic golden scarab you'll be proud to frame, and the map to paint every beetle after it.

This is not a watercolour mastery course. It's not months of theory. It's a clear, follow-along path to one specific, stunning painting, from your first practice wash to the last dark reflection, and then two more beetles with the same map.

  • 🎬 Step-by-step video walkthroughs
  • 📱 Watch on your phone, tablet, or computer
  • 🦥 Go at your own pace
  • ♾️ LIFETIME ACCESS, forever

Here's Exactly What You'll Do, Step by Step:

(Each module ends with a photo of what your painting looks like at that stage, so you can see yourself getting closer.)

Module 1: Getting Set Up, Supplies, Colour and the Highlight Rule

Practice sheet with colour swatches and clean watercolour washes beside paints and brushes

You'll get your paints set up and learn the three watercolour moves the whole beetle is built from. No beetle yet, no pressure, just the foundations. A quick, easy start.

  • The exact paints, brushes, and paper you need (full list is in your free bonus)
  • Mixing the five golds, from pale glow to deep reflection, so your colours stay clean and never go muddy
  • Flat and graded washes, the base of every shell
  • The highlight rule: painting a shiny dome on a practice sheet, so you feel the trick before the real thing
  • Three expert tips for the paper, the water, and knowing when to stop

Module 2: Drawing Your Scarab (Even If You Can't Draw)

The traced outline of the golden scarab on watercolour paper, with the centre line and highlight marks

You'll get the beetle onto your paper, perfectly symmetrical. If drawing makes you nervous, you can simply trace the outline I give you. No drawing skill required.

  • Two easy ways to get the scarab onto your paper: copy it or trace it
  • The centre line trick that keeps both sides of the body the same size
  • Marking where the highlights stay white, before you touch a brush
  • Why this five-minute step stops you ruining the painting later
  • Printable outlines for the scarab and both stag beetles, so you can skip drawing entirely

Module 3: The Scarab Part 1, The Glow Underneath

The golden scarab at the base-wash stage, soft pale yellow washes with the highlights left as white paper

You'll begin the real painting with the softest, palest washes. No detail yet, just gentle warm colour and the glow everything else builds on. An easy, satisfying start.

  • Your first pale gold wash over the whole shell, working around the white
  • Wet-on-wet blends from yellow to ochre so the shell starts to curve
  • Painting the head and the pronotum as one soft shape
  • The legs and antennae, lightly, in the right place
  • The painting secret that stops mud before it starts

Module 4: The Scarab Part 2, Building the Shine

The golden scarab mid-way, layered glazes and the first dark reflections turning the shell to metal

The wow step. You'll layer thin glazes of gold and drop in the dark reflections that turn a yellow bug into a polished metal shell, the part most people get wrong before they're shown the order.

  • Glazing: building depth with three thin layers instead of one heavy one
  • Where the dark reflection shapes go, and why they're what makes it shine
  • The seam down the middle and the edges of the wing cases
  • Soft versus crisp edges, and controlling your paint consistency
  • A quick fix for when a layer comes out too dark

Module 5: The Scarab Part 3, Legs, Details and the Shadow

The finished golden scarab with crisp legs, antennae and a soft cast shadow lifting it off the paper

Now the scarab comes to life. You'll paint the spiny legs and antennae so they look jointed instead of stiff, add the tiniest details, and drop in the soft shadow that lifts the beetle off the page.

  • Legs that look like legs: joints, spines, and the one line that makes them bend
  • Eyes, antennae and the texture on the head
  • The cast shadow that makes people ask if it's a real specimen
  • The last white highlights, and knowing when to put the brush down
  • Finishing, signing, and framing your painting

Module 6: Your Next Beetles, The Two Stag Beetles and Any Beetle After That

The two finished stag beetle paintings side by side

Now you put the map to use. We paint the bronze stag beetle and the saffron stag beetle with the same steps, faster this time, and I show you how to take any beetle photo and turn it into your own painting.

  • The bronze stag beetle, start to finish, applying everything you've learned
  • The saffron stag beetle, its black armour and how to keep orange from going dull
  • Reading a beetle photo: finding the shine, the darks, and the centre line on any species
  • Where to find beetles worth painting, and how to pick ones that look harder than they are
  • Three finished paintings, ready to frame

Got questions? I've got you:

Need help? hello@elytra.studio

Do I need any painting experience?

None at all. This is built for total beginners. We start with the very basics, brush by brush, and if you've painted before you'll simply move through the early lessons faster.

What if I "can't draw"?

You don't have to. Bonus #3 gives you printable traceable outlines of every beetle, with the centre line already on them, so you just print, trace, and paint. A shaky hand or "I can't draw a straight line" is never the thing that stops you.

Isn't something this realistic too advanced for a beginner?

It looks far harder than it is. The whole method is broken into small, simple steps, layer by layer, so you're never doing anything difficult, just simple things in the right order. That's the entire point of the course.

Do I need metallic or special paints for the shine?

No. The shine is the white of the paper and a few dark reflections placed in the right spots. Ordinary watercolours do all of it. The supply list tells you exactly which four colours I use.

Do I have to paint all three beetles?

Not at all. Paint the scarab, paint all three, or paint the scarab five times. You have lifetime access, so it's entirely your pace.

I don't have much time. Is that a deal breaker?

No. The lessons are short and self-paced, and most people finish the scarab over a few relaxed sittings. There's no schedule and no rush, so you paint whenever it suits you.

What materials do I need?

Just basic watercolour supplies: a small set of paints, two brushes, and proper watercolour paper. Bonus #1 is a full supply list with exact recommendations plus budget and splurge options, so you'll know precisely what to get before spending a cent.

Is the course online? What can I watch it on?

Yes, it's 100% online and self-paced. You can watch on your phone, tablet, or computer, whenever you like.

When does it start?

Right away. There's no start date and no waiting, you get instant access the moment you join and can begin your first painting today.

How long do I have access?

Forever. This is lifetime access, including any updates or new lessons I add later, at no extra cost. Nothing expires and you're never "kicked out."

Is this a one-time payment?

Yes. One payment and it's yours for good, with no subscription, no recurring charges, and no hidden fees.

Is it safe to pay online?

Yes. Payment is handled through a secure, encrypted, industry-standard checkout, the same technology used by major online stores. Your card details are never stored by us.

What if I don't like it?

You're covered by a full 30-day money-back guarantee. One email gets every penny back within 24 hours. No questions asked.

What happens right after I join?

As soon as you check out, you'll get instant access details by email so you can start painting straight away. (If you don't see it, check your spam or promotions folder.)

If you've read this far, you already want to paint this. Let's go.
